Keep keeping it weird Montreal and HELLO again WORLD!

There’s a sign in a window I walk by daily.   It’s a medium size white rectangular sign with bold red letters:  “Keep It weird Montreal“.   I couldn’t tell you if it has just been placed in the window or if it’s been there for a long time.  I first noticed it on a nice sunny spring afternoon.   As soon as I read it, a large grin appeared on my face.  It soothed and lifted my spirits at the same time.  Just something about keeping things weird which appeals to me.

I haven’t posted in several months (over half a year!).  One of the major reasons I wasn’t able to post new articles was because I no longer had internet at home.  This meant If I wanted to update the site I had to either use a friends internet connection or use publicly accessible wireless internet connections.

In geek talk, I didn’t want to be connecting to my site and sending my password in the clear.  This meant either setting up a ssl certificate for the site, using ssh or finally using the internet at friends place.    It certainly would of been possible to update the site via ssh, but it involved a lot of hours I wasn’t prepared to put in.  An ssl certificate was out of the budget at the time as I had other priorities.  A friends place was too inconvenient in the sense I would of ended up socializing and not working on new post. We the 99%, the occupy wall street movement and October 15th… #OWS, #anonops

I haven’t posted in too long.  I’ve started several post but finished none.  I’ve been intrigued with the occupy wall street movement.  In my opinion anyone who believes the system has gotten out of hand can’t help but have noticed the movement.  I think by now; day 16, a good portion of the general population has heard about the protest.  There’s still a larger who have most likely not heard of the movement at all.

I remember seeing the original call to occupy wall street.  I honestly admit I didn’t realize ad busters had initiated it until I started working on this post.  You can see part of it below:

When first reading the call I wondered how many individuals would turn out.  Would this be our chance?  Would this be the spark that would light a revolution or would if fizzle out before it got a chance to ignite.  I then forgot about it,  It slipped my mind.

However over the past few weeks the media coverage has increased.  The support has also increased and I felt like I should at least address the subject. Continue reading

Helpdesk, information technology and schadenfreude.

This post has been 15 years in the making.  If you haven’t worked in a help desk environment or are thinking about working in a help desk you’d do yourself a favor by taking the time to read this.

There are a lot of help desk jobs to be had.  To be fair a help desk job can be a good entry way into more interesting work inside a company.  A foot in the door as the expression goes.  They also normally pay above average wages for a “first job”.  In the basic entry level position most times a high school diploma will be enough to get you hired.  They normally include things such as medical benefits and perhaps even access to the company gym.

There are however a lot of negative aspects to the job you should consider. Continue reading

Creativity: Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers, “Jubilation Day”.

Strangely this is the second time in the past few weeks that I’ve stumbled upon articles regarding Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers.  He plays a mean banjo and the rest of the musicians are top notch as well.  This video showed some colorful creativity and the song is fun.  Check out his other youtube videos if you want more.

Lots more artistic, inspiring, funny stuff over at “the curious brain“.  I’m partial to the “What an Astronaut’s Camera Sees“.

Chasing down your dreams.

Woke up, had breakfast and did my morning rounds (email/news/quick glance at my daily sites).  As it was Korea related I took a few minutes to watch a youtube clip of a Korea’s got talent episode. It’s from a young South Korean man Sung-Bong, Choi who was left at an orphanage at the age of 3.  He ran away at the age of 5 because they were beating him.  He started working on the streets selling gum and power drinks.  Assuming the start and the rest of the story is true that was just the beginning of his hard life.

There are many cultures, Korean being one of them, where family bonds are very important.  Not knowing your family for a Korean is something I suspect is a very difficult burden.  “Custom forbids people marrying within their own clan, no matter how distant the cousin might be. In order to know who is who, families and clan keep detailed genealogical records that might go back many hundreds of years.”

Here he is telling the whole world that he simply wants to be normal.  Never stop chasing your dreams folks no matter how hard the struggle, life is just too short.  One of the funnier ways I’ve heard videos like these described on the internet has been: Mysteriously, watching it causes all the dust in your home to go directly into your eyes….  Damn dust.

I figured since I had covered the subjects of struggles, being normal and knowing a little about Korean culture I might discuss this from a different point of view.

Now try to put it all into perspective:  There are still way too many people on our planet struggling in wars, oppression, hunger and poverty.  Based on our history I don’t think my generation or that of my children will see the end of these problems.

Life is a strange, marvelous and macabre dance when you stop to think about it.
